Thomas Dolby in Concert

Thursday, December 7th, 2006

Scott, Steve, Somara, Giles, Josh, and I saw Thomas Dolby in concert last night at a wonderfully small venue. We had a good time, and Dolby did not disappoint (except when his equipment broke for “Leipzig” and he had to move to the next song). His performance of “The Flat Earth” was heavenly.

Steve also blogged about the show.

Last time Scott and I saw Thomas Dolby was at the Austin Opry House, back in 1984(!).

Exposition Boulevard in Austin

Sunday, October 22nd, 2006

Where did its name come from?

From Jane Greig:

The Exposition in Exposition Boulevard was the Texas State Exposition in the 1920s on the grounds of Camp Mabry. According to a 1925 Chamber of Commerce report, the land owners between Windsor Road and Camp Mabry donated the land for Exposition Avenue to prevent congestion at the Exposition grounds.

Just what was on display? An air exhibit of planes and dirigibles, the pageant of India, an automobile show and a livestock show. The Dallas News recounted, “The poultry department is unusually attractive. It is reported that Ma Ferguson will enter a coop of her hens.” (Sounds a little problematic!) These articles and reports are on file at the Austin History Center, 810 Guadalupe St.
